A Brief History
In 2011, Brian Hoyer – a Cedar Falls, IA native and then a student at the University of Northern Iowa – saw a need in the Cedar Falls, IA recycling market. Despite the availability of city provided recycling redemption sites an opportunity existed to provide curbside recycling service to its residents. Enter Recycle Rite. At the outset, Brian made due with minimal resources operating out of his parents’ garage with a pickup truck and calling on friends to help sort the materials he picked up. Fast forward to February of 2016, with a substantial customer base and more appropriate accommodations for picking up and sorting material, a new opportunity arose to add a new chapter and provide additional services.
Between February and July of 2016, a transition was in place for Recycle Rite to become Rite Environmental Inc as we know it today. A deal was struck with another local curbside recycling company to take on Recycle Rite’s established customer base and enabled Brian to acquire the waste hauling and recycling division of Denver Construction. The new acquisition had a substantial footing in the community focused primarily on residential and commercial construction roll-off hauling. In less than a year’s time, the roll-off portion of the business grew by over 50% and previously less pronounced aspects of the business, like residential waste removal and recycling service as well as front/rear load commercial services, grew by an even greater margin. Besides increasing the scope of services Rite could offer, it also grew its potential service area to roughly a 50 mile radius of Waterloo, IA.
In October of 2017, yet another opportunity for expansion presented itself. The owners of Beninga Sanitation – a locally owned waste removal and recycling company operated out of Stout, IA – were seeking to transition out of the business. Rite Environmental looked like a perfect partner to take on service of their customer base built over 50 years and two generations. The acquisition again increased Rite’s service area, this time west of Cedar Falls and Waterloo nearly to Iowa Falls, IA and included service of the City of Dike, IA as well as widespread rural residential service, commercial hog farms and locally owned businesses.
Beginning in April 2021, Rite expanded its recycling services to include the collection of used oil through an acquisition of Cedar Falls Oil Co. The new service line included collection of used oil, filters, absorbents and antifreeze. Used oil collected from commercial sites (oil & lube shops, fleet service stations, farms, etc.) is made available for purchase for many end-uses including, but not limited to, re-refining for new motor oils, making asphalt, shops with oil burners and fence post treatment.
In July 2023, a vendor of the oil division, Iowa Gold Distributing – who accepted Rite’s collected filters and absorbents – reached out seeking a succession plan for their business that had spanned over 3 decades. Seeing the potential for additional vertical integration IGD was accepted into the fold with open arms. The acquisition expanded the local customer base of filter/absorbent customers and added a new line of customers, other oil and filter collectors from across Iowa, into Minnesota, South Dakota and even as far as Wyoming. The opportunity also opened the door to expanding roll-off services for commercial and residential customers in northern Cedar Rapids, Marion and Hiawatha.
As of today, Rite Environmental provides recycling and waste removal services for residential, commercial, and municipal customers. A rapidly growing, locally owned company its mission and values can be exemplified by three words: integrity, innovation and reliability. Characteristics that set Rite apart from local competitors are its commitment to great service at a fair price paired with exceptionally maintained equipment and well trained, uniformed drivers. Additionally, innovative solutions to improving waste and recycling processes and routing have made Rite a leader in the industry and the preferred service provider in the area.
